Continue in What You Have Learned and Become Convinced Of
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it.”
Today's words are the words of God's life, given to each of us, and are important words in spiritual direction at the beginning of the New Year. Especially, we can learn how reading and studying the Bible every day is important and benefits us greatly. I pray that today's words will help you discern this sinful age and learn how to win your faith.
First, the last days (1-9). See verse 1. “But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.” The “last days” is from the first coming to the second coming of Jesus. These words are more realistic in the days when the apostle Paul lived, or today or in the last days. It said that the “terrible times” is the time of suffering, which also is called the "horrible times." So why is the end of the world so painful? Let’s read verses 2-5. “2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
What are the characteristics of the last days? In the last days, people will be lovers of themselves and lovers of money. These two are the first and second roots of sin. Loving yourself is the root of a depraved human being. It is the root of all sins. Loving yourself here means loving your sinful self. This is not a true love of you. It will only destroy you. He, who loves his sinful self, soon loves money. He becomes a man who puts money in God's place and does anything for money. Money is useful, but for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10).
In the last days, people do not solve vexation. They avoid to apologize and to forgive by keeping the vexation in their heart. They grind their teeth and try to pay back to the person who hurt them. Also, they cannot control themselves. Temperance is a high level of spiritual power that requires more than general emotional control. The presence of devil, the manager of darkness, prevents us from being temperate. Temperance means to win the battle against the Devil. Temperance is possible when you live a life that takes precedence over God's words. We each have things to be restrained. Some people have to be restrained in speech, some have to be restrained in energy, and some have to be restrained in games or dramas. Since it is New Year, I pray that we can bear fruit of self-control. Moreover, in the last days people are impatient. They talk thoughtlessly and can't stand it. A wise person thinks carefully, judges carefully, speaks carefully, and acts carefully. But a person without wisdom thinks freely, judges freely, believes everything, says anything, and acts anything, which you suffer from each other. Let’s read verse 4 altogether. “treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—“ It is loving pleasure with the heart to love God. When you love your sinful self, you have no choice but to love pleasure. They waste their youth by spending their time and money lavishly on the passion of their eyes and the lust of their bodies. They would do anything to get pleasure. When our hearts are not filled with God's words and love, we have no choice but to live a life of pleasure. I pray that we can deny ourselves every day and grow up in first loving God and loving the neighbors. Then we can taste real happiness and satisfaction and bear good fruit.
See verse 5. “having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people..” Godliness is the recognition of God in real life. It is to admit that God's mind is hiding and working in the events I encounter, in my relationships with people, and in my life's journey. When a person acknowledges God in everything, amazing things happen. “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this:” (Psalm 37: 5).
Joseph saw God’s working in the sins of his brothers who sold Joseph to Egypt. He has been sold as a slave, but he has worked hard to learn Egyptian, culture, and work. He became the home secretary of Potiphar’s house. Although he overcame Potiphar's wife’s temptations and locked in prison, he helped the warden for he knows that there is God's will. Then he could interpret the dreams of the king’s cupbearer and the baker, and finally interpreted the dreams of King Pharaoh and became the Prime Minister of Egypt. He saw God's will to send himself first to Egypt to save the world. When we know that God works in everything, we can walk with God. Power comes with this godly life.
Daniel, who was taken as a prisoner at Babylon, decided before God not to defile himself with the king's food and the wine he drank. As a result, his wisdom and intelligence were ten times greater than others. He proved that God was alive in the foreign land, and served as prime minister for four generations. In the time of King Dario, knowing the king's prohibition, he opened the window to Jerusalem and knelt down three times a day, as he had done before, and thanked his God. Daniel was thrown into a lions’ den, but God protected and saved him. And he revealed that God is alive, does not change forever, and is a savior in all over the world. When we have a time of godliness every morning, we can walk with God and live a full day. God prospers godly people, answers the prayers, and transforms people.
As I listened to New Year verses of the Shepherd this week, I discovered that they were devoted to godliness and prayer. When they eagerly sought and relied on God, they experienced wonderful things and received God's guidance and blessings. As we look back on the past year, we can find what God has worked in our lives. And I pray that we can thank God.
In the last days, people have a form of godliness, but they deny its power. The appearance of faith is plausible, but the real life is poor. Therefore, we must turn away from them. Whom should we follow not being obsessed over those who have a form of godliness but deny its power?
Second, the example we should follow (10-13). How was Paul's shepherd life? See verses 10,11. “You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings-what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them.” Timothy saw and learned how Paul served the gospel from the second missionary journey. Paul's teachings and life were completely different from those who denied the power of godliness. Paul served the history of the gospel with faith, patience, love, and endurance. 'Intention' refers to the motive of an action, the intent of the action. Others do not know it, but God knows it and even true ones do. They were persecuted for serving the Gospel History. They were kicked out of Antioch for inciting the Jews (Acts13:50). In Iconium, they were stoned almost to death by Jews and strangers (Acts 14:5,6). In Lystra, Timothy's hometown, Paul was stoned and dumped outside the castle in the form of a superstitious carved stone (Acts 14:19). In the midst of this persecution, Paul preached the gospel, and the Lord kept him safe. So far, Timothy has learned the words from Paul the shepherd and imitated his life by preaching the gospel with him. The world loves himself, loves money, loves pleasure, but Timothy followed Paul the shepherd. Paul's purpose in his life was to learn Jesus and spread the gospel to the ends of the earth. In his mission he relied fully on the Lord and waited for the salvation of the sheep till the end. His patience comes only from love. He endured any hardship and did not give in. Timothy vividly remembered what happened to his shepherd and suffered together.
He preached the gospel in these persecutions, and the Lord protected and kept Paul safe. In his mission he relied fully on the Lord and waited for the salvation of the sheep till the end. His patience comes only from love. He endured any hardship and did not give in. Timothy vividly remembered what happened to his shepherd and suffered together.
Why did Timothy follow that shepherd? See verse 12. “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” Paul was persecuted, not because his life was unusual. Anyone who tries to live godly in Christ Jesus is persecuted. Why is it so? It is natural to be persecuted in those who seek only self-benefit, and want to live godly, in those who love money, love pleasure, and do not release their vexation. Also, the world hates Christ. Their sins and darkness are revealed through Him. At that time, we must repent and turn back, but they love sin. They reject the gospel and persecute as if darkness hates light. Even today, the world hates people who live godly, because not only we are deficient in them, but basically the world is evil.
What happens to this world in the meantime? See verse 13. “while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived.” Those who live in faith are persecuted; while the wicked and swindlers become more cunning and evil. You deceive and get deceived by others. People are thorough in their own interests, guarding themselves, and become fierce in order to take away from others. Wouldn't those who recognize the power of reverence and live a gentle life be trampled on in these people? Can everyone live as shepherds among the people who live only on their own interests? What should Timothy do in this situation?
Third, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of (14-17). See verse 14. “But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,”
“But as for you” This means that no matter how others live, you must live in the Lord's army. The world runs into a deeper world of evil, but Timothy must continue to learn and be convinced. He must not compromise or stain with such a world. No matter how the people of the world live, Timothy must live by what he has learned and convinced.
How can Timothy live in what he learns and is convinced of? Because he knows from whom he learned it first. Timothy learned the Old Testament well from his mother and grandmother from his early age. Later, he was taught by the shepherd, Paul. We can be confident in what Timothy has learned and stay in it, because he knows the apostle, Paul's teachings, conduct, intentions, faith, and love. With the words of God that Timothy had learned, and the teachings of Paul the shepherd, and the influence of Paul’s life, he was able to continue to stay with them. The influence of the shepherd Paul lights his heart like a lamp. It was the memory of the shepherd that sustained Timothy in many sufferings.
Also, it is because of the Bible that Timothy can live in what he learns and is convinced of. What about the Bible he learned? Look at the verse 15. " And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." In the Bible there is the wisdom that leads to salvation. The Old Testament says about the Messiah that will come. Jesus is the Christ prophesied in the Bible. When we study the Bible deeply, we meet Jesus and earn eternal life. Some people are told every week when they study the Bible as vividly as God speaks to them, some people taste sweet like honey, some have an experience of disappearance of heavy heart, and some have the wisdom to gain insight into life. The Bible has the wisdom to solve each of our life problems and make us experience salvation.
See the verse 16. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” All Scripture is inspired by God. God’s breath is in the Bible. Just as God created man and breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostril, the man became a living person, which means that the word of God has life. When we read the Bible, light shines in our hearts. As I read the Bible, I feel that the Bible is reading my heart. This is when you have awe of God. When we read the Bible, we receive the light of revelation that knows God. Lord’s word is a lamp of my feet and a light of my path. God speaks to me through the Bible. Through the Bible, by meeting with God in person gives us faith and when the words are received we will be born again. God forgives my sins and becomes my eternal Father. Those, who lives with God as his Father enjoys life full of love, protection, and care. The word of God becomes the spiritual daily bread for his children. Humans are spiritual beings who cannot live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. What we really need to seek is not for decaying food, but for eternal life. When the word of God is fed to us, we grow and become spiritually matured.
Why should Timothy live in the Bible? This is because it is beneficial for educating people. Living in the Bible is to attend the school of God. In God's school we learn what God is like. We learn why and how Jesus, God's only son, has justified us. We learn that this is the way to make peace with God and cleanse all sins. When we come to God in the name of Jesus, we are convinced that God will not forsake us. They learn to hate themselves with full of sins and serve God with a pure heart. To become righteous the discipline may follow. If you are educated by righteousness, you will become a man of God. You will have the ability to do all kindness. This are the benefits for those who live in the Bible.
We eat daily bread for our godly times, worship every Sunday, and eat the word of God. When we live in this world, we experience hard work, stressful work, painful and sad work, failure and frustration. But in this way, when we eat and pray God's Word constantly, we learn refreshment and wisdom to solve problems. The shepherd himself must not only eat God's Word well, but also feed the sheep as a nutritious food. If you eat the Word faithfully like this, you will grow and bear fruit.
I believe that God will do new things among us this year. When you dwell in God's Word, you can meet God doing new things. As we study, meditate, and act on the Word of God, we can see the passion and vision to renew our minds and do new things. When we dwell in the Word, we can put on the power of life and serve the whole history of salvation. I pray that each of you will improve and grow more mature through the life living in the Lord’s Word given every week and in daily bread for the whole year 2020.
