Verses | Matthew 6:19-34
Key verse | Matthew 6:33
First seek His Kingdom and His Righteousness.
"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
Nowadays, due to Covid-19, people lose jobs and have difficulties in business, eating, and living. And because of this, they worry about what to eat and what to wear. They worry if they can live a healthy life not being infected by Coronavirus. While it is difficult to meet university students, we concern about studying Bible verses and cultivating students. There are many things to worry about in life. Instead of worrying, Jesus tells us to believe in God and seek His kingdom and His righteousness first. I pray that we will make our priorities clear and win through today's verse.
First, the treasure must be stored in heaven (19-24). We should not store treasures on earth for ourselves. There moths and vermin destroy, and thieves break in and steal. In the past, clothes were expensive. It was very expensive because they sew and made clothes by themselves at home. Rich people wore silk clothes, but even those expensive silk clothes get old and be spoiled by moths. Also, people make a safe and keep money. But money is also lost by vermin. Also, when you have a lot of money, crooks scent and seduce you. Last week, a representative who used to run a loan business at the Jeonju Jungang Market and the traditional Morene Market with a high-income bait disappeared with 30 billion won. Half of the market's merchants have suffered damage. They left their money to run a lime asset, but it was suspended. The company in charge of asset management lost –100% of its money, so it left it with no money back. Victims left their money in hundreds of millions of won, so the damage is big. They got this big damage for leaving their money due to short-term high profit ratio. When you look at Proverbs 23:5 warns: " Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle. "
See verses 20 and 21. "20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Jesus emphasizes "for yourselves" twice and says to store up treasures in heaven. Jesus tells us where to invest in a right way. How do you store up treasures in heaven specifically? In Luke 12:33 "Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys." To rescue neighbors in need, to dedicate oneself to the Lord and the Gospel is to build up treasures in heaven. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Jesus Christ is the last remaining treasure. All the attention of the apostle Paul was on Jesus. He hoped that Christ would be honored whether he lived or die. To get Jesus, he considered everything he had as feces. He did his best to know and gain Jesus Christ and put priority on it.
We can seek His kingdom by saving people and giving tithes and offerings. Serving meals for sheep and serving for missionary work is specifically a way of seeking the kingdom of God. What we did for ourselves will burn and what we did for Jesus Christ will remain. We must be strong and unshakable, and always be more diligent in God’s work. This is because our efforts are not wasted in Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58). Let's find out the verses of 1 Timothy 6:17-19 and read them together. "17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. 19 In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life."
See verses 22 and 23. "22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" Eyes function as lamps in our body. Ancient people thought that the world would become brighter or darker depending on the state of the eye. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. The eye is the window of the soul. A good eye is a healthy or clean state. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body is filled with light. Good eyes can have the right sensitivity. A man with good eyes has the right perspective and values. They live by building treasures in heaven, knowing that it will remain forever. But those who have poor eyes due to greed think that the world is everything and build treasures on earth. They do not serve God with wealth, but they serve wealth as their master.
We cannot serve both God and wealth. See verse 24. " “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Here, money in Aramaic means "Mammon", which is the name of the property god that Canaanites served. Mammon has the power to dominate human beings. They disguise themselves as if they can do anything with money. However, you can buy a house with money, but you can't buy a blessed family. You can buy gifts with money, but you cannot buy love. You can buy sports equipment with money, but you can't buy health. Our hearts are one, so even if we want to serve two masters, we naturally value one master and despise the other. God is the only one that man must love and serve with all his heart, character, and strength. If God takes my life, I must leave everything behind as it is. Everything I own is left by God while I live in this land. We must use by God's will as stewards of wealth, time and life.
Second, we should not worry, but believe in God. From verse 25, it's about people who don't exist. Disciples of Jesus was worried about what to eat for his life, what to drink, and what to wear for his body. In verses 25-34 the word ‘worry’ appears six times. In the Greek word ‘worry' comes from the meaning of heart 'divided', 'separated'. Because of too much anxiety, your heart starts to separate. Worry will only do you harm. 95 percent of the concerns are about what will happen in the future.
How should we overcome this when we are worried? We have to think about what's more important. See verse 25. "“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" Life is more important than food, and your body is more important than your clothing. Will not God, who has given us life and body, also give us food and clothing for life? Jesus teaches his disciples audiovisual education through nature. See verses 26-29. "26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.“ God waters the fields and mountains according to the time to let plants grow. The plants are fed by animals. People live by feeding on the plants and animals. Even though plants seem to stay still, they grow up to be active in carbon assimilation and bear fruit. Birds and animals also move diligently to find food. People also get something to eat and wear while working. Paul the Apostle said that those who don't want to work should not eat. We are educated in order to work. We educate and work hard for a more stable and better welfare in fierce competition. But how should the people live if they can’t work? Do they have to starve to death? The motto of the Bobper Community, which provides free meals, is "Everyone has the right to eat and live." Furthermore, "Anyone who is sick has the right to be treated" is the start of the Christian free hospital. See verse 30. "If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith?" Jesus points out that worry comes from little faith. If you have faith in Father God who knows everything and can achieve it, we should pray instead of worrying. 1 Peter 5:7 says. "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." God is waiting for our prayers. He's all set to help us. He leads our way of life.
There is an adage in the world, "People do things or work to make a living." They work, fight, and sin to make a living. But we don't have to worry about eating and wearing like the pagans. See verses 31,32. “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.” The pagans don't know God and devote their wealth to the gods. Their characteristics are anxious (25,31) if there is no property, and they want to stack more even if they are wealthy. However, children who serve God as their lord share with others around them when they have fortune (20) and trust God who knows well when they are not.
Third, seek first his kingdom and his righteousness. God's children are different from the pagans. What should we seek first? See verse 33. “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” The emphasis here is first. 'First' means the priority of life. Of course, believers also have to work hard to live. The problem is on what thing we should put our strength living in this land? It is to seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness first. “His kingdom” refers to God's rule. Our hearts must be first ruled by God. When God's reign comes to our hearts, we serve and worship him as king. We will be loyal to God. When we are under God's rule, our family serves God's rule. When a family is controlled by God, even the communities and nations we belong to live in God's reign. The kingdom of God is righteousness and love. Under God's reign, we have real satisfaction and joy.
We must preach the gospel of forgiveness of sins in order to seek for the kingdom of God. Jesus Christ died on the cross and resurrected His kingdom by destroying the kingdom of Satan that was ruled through sin and death. We can now receive forgiveness of our sins through faith in Jesus and become holy children of God. As the Holy Spirit dwells in us, He leads, teaches, and empowers us to preach the kingdom of God. Preaching God’s words and living a holy life is to seek the kingdom of God. Jesus healed the sick and cast out demons from the world. And he brought freedom, peace, and righteousness. We can seek for the kingdom of God by fighting spiritual battles against the powers of darkness in the world.
Also, His righteousness is God's righteousness. Seeking God's righteousness is having right relationship with God and obeying God's will. It is to do good that God is pleased with. Also, the life of seeking God's righteousness is to resemble the character of Jesus. It is a life of learning the humility, gentleness, and love of Jesus.
“First” when we seek the His kingdom and God’s will, Heavenly Father will solve all the problems of the livings. It is also the restoration of the words given in the creation of heaven and earth through Jesus. God created the heavens and the earth and blessed people. “God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” (Genesis 1:28). . ” God blessed the man giving him a mission and solved the food problem. “God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”” So far, God has never disappointed those who believed and obeyed His Word. God gives more than we ask for or think for.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (34).” We should live by faith every day instead of unnecessary anxiety. In addition, since the owner of the time of tomorrow is God, we must leave the work of tomorrow to God and cherish and live today.
Through today's words of God, I learned to seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness before I worry. I want to pray to God with all my concerns. The Lord is the master of the history. Also, the Lord is at work. As I am more devoted to prayer, I want to learn the heart of God and strive to associate with the Lord. The Lord wants me to be a man of faith through many things. He humbly trusts and trusts the Lord and wants to be centered and move forward. I pray that we will receive God's rule and fulfill his righteousness while working at your best every day.
