The Parable of Four Types of Soil
"But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”"
Jesus taught God’s words in parables. In today's parable, He says that the word is like a seed. Seeds are mostly small, black, and ugly. Most of them are wrapped in shells, so it's considered insignificant if you look at them offhand. But inside the seeds, amazing genes are overlapped and stored. Above all, there is life inside the seed. When the seed is planted in a soil it blossoms and produces fruits that feed many people. Just like this, there is also life that saves us in the verses. In them, all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. When this word is planted in me, it changes me, makes my life beautiful, and bears many fruits. Above all, you will be the one who owns the most precious secrets of heaven. However, even though how precious the word is, the results vary significantly depending on the attitude of the listener. I pray that through today's message, we will learn the secret of our religious life that bears a hundred times of fruit.
Since there were too many crowds, Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. Such large crowds gathered around Jesus that He got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. Then He told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Here the "seed" refers to the word of God, and the soil represents the state of a person’s heart who listened to God’s words. Seeds are vital, so they are likely to bear infinite fruit. How the hearts of those who hear the verses should be in order to bear fruit?
First, a heart like a path. See verse 19. "When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path." When the man hears the word of God, the evil snatches away what was sown in his heart. The evil do not let the listener understand the message. They ignore it, saying that they know it with pride. Jesus taught things that happen in daily life in parables so that even a child can hear and understand it. It's easy to hear the parable without catching the details, saying it's too easy to understand. As we study the gospel once a year, we can think that we know everything and not listen carefully. If we repeat the same verses, we tend to fall in inertia and become perfunctory. If you only judge and teach not accepting the ones He gave due to knowing the basic common sense about Bible verses, you don't receive the grace of the message. Sometimes you cannot hear the words of God due to being busy in world businesses. The evil distracts and turns their attention elsewhere preventing them from focusing on the word of God. What should we do when our hearts become as hard as the path?
At this time, we must change our hearts with a plow of repentance. Hosea 10:12 said, "Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, until he comes" We must repent of our hearts that were in inertia and became easeful. We should break all stereotypes and treat the message with humility to learn. Only then the message can come into the heart, sprout and root. I pray that we will listen to the words of God by discerning the work of Satan that tries to snatch out the word and by working hard in prayer.
Second, a heart like a rocky soil. See verses 20 and 21. "20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away." The characteristic of the rocky soil is that the seed cannot take root. The person at once receives the word with joy, but endures it for a while and then falls down. The reason is that there is no root. In order to grow roots, you must remove the stones in your heart.
So what are the stones that prevent the words from taking root? There is a small civic stone that wants to live a comfortable and stable life. There is a stone of moderatism that fitly lives in faith of religion on the level of no lost. Because these stones are in their hearts, they like to study words, but do not feel comfortable living according to the words. They are afraid of the words changing their lives. When a message demands sacrifice and dedication, they leave the church. Because of these stones, they fall down when they are in trouble or persecution because of the message. Rebellion comes from the word "pressurize," and persecution comes from the word "chasing”. If we live according to the words of God, around us there are invisible pressure and attack from Satan that wants to eat. At this time, those who have no roots of faith fall. But those who have roots will grow and take root deeper in the Lord through hardship or persecution.
I pray that we can remove by repentance the stones in us, such as the old sins, distrust, selfishness, humanism, laziness, and complacency in us, and take root in Jesus.
The Bible teaches us to take root in many places. Jesus said in John 15:5. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." Apostle Paul said in Colossians 2:6,7a. "6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, …" Rooting means having a personal faith in which you have a deep personal relationship with Jesus, who is the vine, and also having a clear calling on the basis of your mission. The call of individual faith and mission is closely related, like needles and thread. A person who has no call for personal faith and mission falls because he or she does not have the inner power to endure difficulties during his or her religious life. But whoever has a deep personal relationship with Jesus and is clearly blessed with salvation lives with God wherever he goes.
Third, a heart like the thorns. See verse 22. "The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful." A person with a heart like thorns has spiritual wishes and wants to live according to the word. They take root in words and live obedient lives. At the same time, they have heart of loving the world. They have a desire to succeed, live richly, and have fun in the world. Spiritual wishes and world desires coexist in the heart and fight constantly. Because of that, the word loses its power. A person with a thorn-like heart cannot grow the seed of word because of the temptation of momentary pleasure and fun. They use up all the energy because they fall into YouTube, games, webtoons, etc. You must repent knowing that these sins stab me and bind me. If you are caught by a thorn of concern in your life, you will be powerless and lose the joy of your faith. Therefore, we must leave our concern to the Lord. We should pray instead of worrying.
Another characteristic of the thorny soil is the deceitfulness of wealth. The greed for wealth arises from the desire to possess more than being satisfied with what we have. Today, young people want to raise money by investing in real estate and stocks. We think we will be happy if we own more. However, the swamp of desire is endless and cannot be filled no matter how much it is filled. The temptation of wealth comes from the desire not to suffer, but live in comfort. When a person is choked by the thorn of the deceitfulness of wealth, the spiritual desire disappears and the cross of His mission becomes burdensome. And the person becomes stingy that tries to makes one’s own. Then, people fall into the temptation and into the trap without realizing it. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 says. “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many grieves.” We cannot serve God and wealth, God and idols at the same time. Israel was destroyed because of syncretistic faith. Pruning does not solve the problem of the thorns. We need to pull out the roots of thorns and weeds. We must thoroughly repent of our wealth, pleasures, and selfish desires to take the first place in our hearts. I pray to give our hearts to God and serve him with all our hearts.
The anxiety of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth come to life without even realizing it. It's as if weeds weren't planted, but they appear and start to grow. After it rains, it rapidly grows. In order for us to live a life of faith that bears fruit; we must immediately pull out the weeds of anxiety and the thorns of the deceitfulness of wealth. This way we focus without dispersing our strength. To have a beautiful garden, we have to be willing to work on pulling out the weeds. We can reap abundant fruit when you work to pluck weeds and thorns.
Fourth, heart like the good soil. Look at verse 23. “But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.” Those who have a good soil of heart hear and understand the Word. ‘To hear’ does not mean to hear passively. It is does not mean to be forced to listen superficially. It is listening to the Word in an active manner with a fondness for the Word. 'To realize' means to understand as “understand” in English. The word “understand” is “shniece” in Greek, which is in present participle and in active form that means to continuously listen and understand with an active and dynamic manner. In the text, the word ‘understand' appears five times. This tells us the importance of understanding the Word. Understanding the Word means obedience from the heart as well as intellectual recognition. In some cases, we understand the Word by knowing it, but in other cases we understand it by obeying or by experiencing. In other words, realization of the message grows deeply in spiral with the understanding and obedience going forwards and backwards. When we understand and obey the Word, the Word gains power within ‘me’, defeating all the forces of darkness that work within ‘me’, and helping ‘me’ live a fruitful life. Those with a good heart love and yearn for the Word and meditate the Word day and night. At this time, your heart will be enriched with the Word and your personality will change. If you bear beautiful inner fruit, you will naturally produce fruit that pleases God externally as well. Eventually, because of the Word, you will live a life with joy by experiencing the heaven inside.
Jesus' disciples were villagers in Galilee, who were deficient people. They were filled with worldly greed and human thoughts. When these people lived a life of hearing and understanding Jesus' words, they became apostles and fulfilled the work of Acts. There is amazing power in the Word of God. When you listen and obey the Word like a child, any person will change and become a new person.
God gave us life, gave us gifts, and gave us time. He also gives us the word of life and helps us to bear fruit. If we live in the word of Jesus, dwell in his love, and bear fruit in deep fellowship with him, we are glorified by God. Missionary Isaac Kim, who was my one-to-one shepherd, grew up by hearing the complaints from his mother, “I don't know why I gave birth to you. I hope the tiger came down from the mountain and bite you off." He was fateful and sad about his life. He wandered around without knowing the meaning of his life. But one day, an UBF friend named Woo-cheol Lee invited him to Genesis Bible School. At first he was cold in heart, but by Genesis 1:31 “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” he received great grace from this verse. He had no foundation for the Word at all, but when that one word fell into his heart, a remarkable change took place. God's word has power. Until now, he really wanted to live, but he had no strength to live, and these words gave him strength to live. There was no strength, and then suddenly a new strength arose. With this new power, he studied hard for the examination and passed it the following year by God's grace. After that, while living as a shepherd with devotion, he gave up his position as a prosecutor, went on to become an American missionary, and was used in the history of making disciples of American intellectuals.
In conclusion, I pray that we will be able to produce a crop, yielding hundred times of what was sown, in our hearts by deeply accepting one Word of God.
