Lesson #3
JESUS TALKS WITH A SAMARITAN WOMAN
John 4:1-42
Key verse 4:7
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"
This passage showed a real life transformation of a Samaritan woman, which affected others’ lives. We should have the idea that Jesus did with this one woman, as the harvest is ripe.
1. Where did this event take place? How was it that Jesus had come to this place? Who came to the well? What was unusual about a lone woman coming to draw water in the heat of the day?
2. How did Jesus begin the conversation? What does this reveal about Jesus? What was the woman’s first reaction to Jesus’ request? What does this show us about her? What were the barriers that came between Jesus and this woman?
3. What gift did Jesus offer to give her if she asked? (10; Rom 6:23) Why was she puzzled by His offer? (11-12) How is the living water Jesus gives different from the water in Jacob’s well? (13-14; Rev 22:1; Jn 7:28, 1:4) How did she respond? Note the progress in their relationship.
4. What did Jesus tell her to do? (16) What big problem in her life did Jesus’ command touch? Why did she bring up the issue of worship? In what respect was her problem a worship problem? What did Jesus teach her about worship and about God?
5. What does Jesus declare about Himself? (26) What does this mean to the woman and to us? What did the woman do? (28-29) What does this tell us about her changed life? (26-30)
6. Why was Jesus no longer hungry? (31-34) How could Jesus see the harvest field of the world through this one woman? What did He teach His disciples? How did many Samaritans come to believe in Jesus? (39-42)
